When a big storm is in the forecast, the first thing to do is make sure you and your family have a gameplan for if and when things become severe and need to seek safety. When the storm passes, regardless of what type it is, you should check the outside of your home for any damage that the storm may have caused. Also be sure to check the lowest points of your home to make sure that no water is finding its way inside. If the weather is cold enough, check all pipes that are near the outside to make sure none of them have busted or are leaking.
